1932: Elvin Jernigan Carey born Jun 30,1932 Black Hawk, Carroll County, Mississippi; father William Carey (May 1897-Apr 27,1961; born Lexington, Holmes Co, MS; RIP Cook Co, Illinois); mother Vallie M Burch Carey (born 1907 Mississippi; RIP Feb 17,1961, Cook Co, IL).


1939: Elvin J Carey family moved to Chicago, Cook County, IL.


1949-1950: Elvin J Carey graduated Wendell Phillips Academy High School, Bronzeville neighborhood on South Side of Chicago; joined ROTC. Wendell was first predominantly African-American high school in City of Chicago & was designated a Chicago Landmark on May 7, 2003.


1950: Elvin J Carey age 18 lived Chicago, IL with father William age 55; mother Vallie age 43; brother Franklin Carey age 15 (born 1935; RIP Oct 6,1954, Chicago, IL); sister Mary age 12 (born 1938); brother James M Carey age 8 (born 1942); sister Olivia Carey Porter age 26 (born 1924; 3 daughters); Niece Jennifer Porter age 6; Niece Alberta Porter age 2; Niece Jeannette Porter newborn.
1952: Elvin J Cary served in US Marines Mar 5,1952 to Mar 4,1955; Korean War (Jun 1950-Jul 1953; 5 million soldiers & civilians were killed in this Forgotten War). Marines Corps Scout Snipers are legendary for being tactical proficiency, physical & mentally tough. The Scout Snippers had extraordinary abilities for reconnaissance & surveillance professionals and were definitely force multipliers on the battlefield.

1953 - 1991: Elvin J Cary returned to Chicago and worked for the Chicago Transit Authority that began operating Chicago's rapid transit trains on Oct 1,1947; retired as Superintendent of Bus Operations for the CTA that has a workforce of over 10,000.

1992: Elvin J Cary after retiring from the CTA helped organize and start the Matthew House in Chicago that is a nonprofit community-based organization and has provided food, daytime shelter, permanent supportive housing, and supportive services to men, women, families, and children who are experiencing or at risk of becoming homeless.

2003: Elvin J Cary was elected first-African American Legion President. The Legion is a non-profit organization of US war veterans. The Legion was formed Mar 15, 1919, in Paris, France & chartered by the US Congress Sep 16,1919.

2007: Elvin J Cary RIP age 74 Chicago, Illinois. Family: wife Beverly and children Derrick David Stinson
